I have a question.
Must a person repent of a known sin to be forgiven of that sin?
The person claims Christ as savior.
They are baptized, attend church, pray and claim to be a Christian.
They are aware of the sin in their lives, lets say ongoing theft, but they believe God will forgive them of this sin. They do not change and they do not pray for forgiveness of this sin. They have justified this theft as something they must do for their job. They give a portion of the money to charity.
Are they forgiven of the sin? Will they be covered by the blood and accepted into heaven even though they never repented of this sin?
Looking for peoples opinions on this with or without verses, but if you have biblical support please provide it.
Read John Chapter 15 (Specifically Verse 2) were it says any branch that does not dear fruit (meaning fruit of the spirit) will be taken away and those that do bear fruit he will “prune” to bear more fruit. The natural process for this is conviction. When we as a Christian get conviction there should be a natural restlessness in our hearts until we give into the pruning. My thought is that your “friend” with the stealing problem is likely not bearing much fruit because of his obvious behaviors. So does the blood of Jesus cover thieves? Absolutely! However he demands that they repent and that does not mean just a single monumental surrender. This is a daily cognition to the prodding of the Spirit and a lifestyle of repentance. So I am not going to go so far as to be the judge on this issues (God is!) but I will say that I do believe that a lot of people think they are safe because they said a prayer on time when they were young and attend church. The scripture is clear that the way in narrow.
Thanks for your reply. The person mentioned is hypothetical. Just seemed easier to give an example. I just lately keep hearing people talk about being sinners, and yes I know I am a sinner, but it seems sometimes almost like bragging.
I just sometimes wonder if we have left the discussion of sin and living a life glorifying God behind under the concept that, “I am saved so my sins are covered”. Almost like we can do anything and get away with it because we confess Christ as our savior.
I just wanted to hear other people’s interpretation.
Grace is the tool God gives up to overcome our sins, not remain in them. If a person is living a life believing that they can just keep on sinning than they are obviously not reading the bible much. It is very clear in Romans 6: 1-2 as well.
I was just doing a word search for repent. It is mentioned a bunch.
Acts 26 has an interesting verse
20 but I announced first unto those of Damascus and at Jerusalem and throughout all the coasts of Judaea and then to the Gentiles that they should repent and turn to God, doing works worthy of repentance.
It is Paul giving an over view of his ministry to Agrippa.
I see the word repent used often, but it seems to be associated with the initial turning to God.
The one thing that gets us into heaven is our faith in Christ–accepting Him as Lord of our life. If a person has become a true Christian, then he or she will be admitted into heaven, whether or not he or she has repented of any specific sin. Of course, we will live a blessed and joyful life if we follow God’s guidance. Getting into heaven and living an abundant, blessed life are totally different!
